Holly Ridge, North Carolina

Once one of the smallest towns on the southeastern North Carolina coast, Holly Ridge is known today as the gateway to Topsail Island. With numerous residential developments completed recently or still under construction, the town has quietly become a hot spot for people who want to live near the beach.

Holly Ridge is located between Jacksonville and Wilmington. Its lone stoplight, at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 50, points the way toward Topsail Island, just five miles away. Since the city limits of Holly Ridge extend all the way to the Intracoastal Waterway in several areas, the town is a prime location for water enthusiasts.

Holly Ridge is part of Onslow County, named for Arthur Onslow, speaker of the British House of Commons from 1728 to 1761.

The U.S. military fueled a population boom in the tiny town of Holly Ridge as World War II came to an end. The U.S. Navy and Johns Hopkins University had taken over nearby Topsail Island for Operation Bumblebee. The top-secret, experimental project was established to develop and test missiles, and the work completed there cleared the way for the advance of supersonic jet aircraft design and brought the United States to the threshold of modern space technology. Topsail Island was one of three test sites established along the Atlantic seaboard and was at one time considered as a possible permanent home for the space program, but the government eventually left Topsail Island and moved south to Florida.

Meanwhile, with the establishment of Camp Davis, a now-abandoned base along Highway 17, thousands of Army and Navy troops took up temporary homes in Holly Ridge.

When the military left, Holly Ridge reverted to its former identity as a sleepy little town.

Today, Holly Ridge is changing rapidly and is now regarded as a viable extended beach community. New subdivisions include town houses, condominiums and single-family homes selling at prices that fit a wide variety of family budgets.

The residents of Holly Ridge have always embraced the small-town feel that has always defined their home. With its laid-back atmosphere and family-oriented activities, the town has much to offer.
